Assessments

Cognitive Assessments

Cognitive assessments, also commonly called intelligence tests, help assess the ability of a child or adolescent to learn and also identifies their cognitive strengths and weaknesses.

These tests are administrated by a trained psychologist and assess various areas of cognitive capacity, like memory, verbal comprehension, processing speed or reasoning skills.

Learning Assessments

Learning assessments can be combined with cognitive assessments to help identify whether any learning difficulties are present. Learning assessments take two hours to complete and may be done over two sessions if the child struggles with attention and concentration.

The results of the cognitive assessments and learning assessments can be used in combination with other background information to develop individualised learning plans and interventions.

How can cognitive and learning assessments help children and adolescents?

Assessments with children can assist in the examination of:

Learning difficulties or intellectual impairment

presence of developmental disorders
Intellectual giftedness

ADOS Assessments

An ADOS assessment is used to help determine whether a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder may be appropriate. The ADOS assessment uses a combination of questions, activities and play to allow the psychologist to observe a range of the child’s behaviours and responses. The psychologist will then score and interpret the results and provide you with a written report to assist with a diagnosis where appropriate.

ADHD Assessments

A combination of cognitive and behaviour assessment is used to help determine whether a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder may be appropriate.

Identifying and treating a diagnosis of ADHD can have a range of benefits for a child, including:

  • Helping them to focus in class and on their assessments
  • Helping them to develop a more positive view of school and their ability to do school work
  • Helping them to better plan and organise
  • Improving their ability to follow instructions
  • Reducing impulsive behaviours

Benefits of early assessment and detection

Early detection is key.

The most common benefits that we noticed during our years of experience include:

  • Better chance of treatment and more time available to plan and action
  • Opportunity to access appropriate supports
  • Appropriate learning plans resulting in less frustration at school and improved education
  • Ability to utilise strengths to reach a child’s full potential
  • Reduced anxiety and worries about unknown problems

The Process

Once the assessment has been completed, we will write a report that indicates and interprets the results of the test and other observations and recommendation. We will then organise a feedback session with you where we will discuss the outcomes of the test, provide our recommendations for the parents and school and answer any questions you may have.
